Rumah Joglo Jawa

Joglo roof type

The Joglo type is the most complex roof structure found on Javanese houses, usually associated with people of high status in society or the royal family’s houses. The ground plan is commonly a square raised floor. The structural essence of the Javanese pendopo contains two separate roof structures, the dalem and the pendopo, which are connected by pringgitan and covered by a limasan type roof. Both the pendopo and the dalem are covered by a four - sided, three - layered pyramidal roof. The roof construction is characterised by a four sided pyramidal roof comprising two or three layers, the centre part forming two points with the top being sharper than the other sides and the lower layers having a shallower slopes. The centre part is supported by four main pillars called soko guru while the lower side roofs are also supported by four main posts on the corner and other smaller sub - supported columns. The main pillars at the centre are topped with the tumpang sari type ceiling, constructed with multi - layered beams and cross beams which form an inverted stepped ceiling (Fig VII.7).

Although the above descriptions indicate the variety of roof types, the following explanations concentrate on the joglo type of roof which is the most complex. The exploration of the house mostly deals with its planning and the elaborate form of construction.
Ceblokan Joglo
This Joglo type-roofed house makes use of pillars whose sills are buried in the ground. This house has no sunduk.

Kepuhan Limolasan Joglo
The structure of this long and rectangular joglo-roofed house is basically similar to other joglo-typed houses, but it does not have ganja, a beam laid across the pillars.

Wantah Apitan Joglo
This Joglo house with extended roofs on all sides has ground plan scale 1:2. It is a kind of a house that has five hammer beams; therefore, the house looks slimmer.

Mangkurat Joglo (Limolasan)
This type of a house is basically similar to Pangrawit Joglo house, but the roof is taller than that of the Pangrawit. Unlike Pangrawit, which makes use of pillars (soko bentung) to connect the beams, this house makes use of Lambang Sari instead.
